Bridge Lessons

Bridge lessons from beginning through advanced play, taught by well qualified, certified instructors, are available at the Bridge Club of Lexington.  These lessons are applicable whether you want to play "Party Bridge" at home,  want to start playing at a Bridge Center or playing On-Line on the Internet.  Bridge basics apply equally to "Rubber Bridge" or "Duplicate Bridge."

The following three classes are currently accepting enrollments:

Note: The Bridge Club of Lexington weekly Novice game is 12:00 noon each Tuesday.  You are not required to play in the Novice game to attend these classes but it will give you a supervised opportunity to practice your lessons in a relaxed, friendly environment.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Following is a description of a series of three eight-week classes.   Each class can be taken independently based on your existing skill level or taken from the beginning if you are new to bridge.  Another option is to take one class now and take the remaining classes later when this series is offered again.  In other words, feel free to "mix and match" to suit your personal time schedule, learning pace or experience level.

1. Basic Bidding Techniques

Basic Bidding Techniques is the focus of the first eight-week class in this series. The class length is 2 hours.  These lessons will be structured to accommodate beginners and players with limited experience.  Topics include:

bulletEvaluating the hand
bulletOpening the bidding
bulletResponses to the opening bid
bulletRe-bids by Opener
bulletRe-Bids by Responder
bulletOvercalls
bulletTake-Out Doubles
bulletAdditionally, topics such as the Stayman convention, pre-empting and slam bidding will be introduced
bulletBoth duplicate and rubber bridge scoring will be taught

2. Play of the Hand

The second class in this series is Play of the Hand  with the emphasis on how to play a hand of bridge.  This class includes a review of the initial bidding class and is designed for students who have completed the Basic Bidding Techniques class as well as for more experienced players.  Topics include:

bulletPlanning the play
bulletDeveloping additional tricks
bulletEliminating losers
bulletWatching out for entries
bulletManaging the trump suit

3. Defending (Defense I)

The third eight-week class in this series will be defending against your opponents contract.  These lessons will stress:

bulletPlanning the defense
bulletSecond and third hand play
bulletCounting the opponents hands
bulletLeading against no trump and suit contracts
bulletShowing attitude and count while on defense
bulletGiving suit preference signals
bulletConcepts taught in the bidding and play of the hand classes will be reviewed. 

These three eight-week classes, Bidding, Play of the Hand and Defense, will be taught by experienced instructors who have been accredited to teach bridge by ACBL.  They  are all Life Master Bridge players and have several years of experience as a bridge instructors.  “Learn by Doing” is the theme of the lessons since more than half of the time in class involves “hands on” experience and practice.

Interested parties may sit in during the first week of any class at no charge and then decide if the class is something they wish to pursue.  Class size will be limited to 20.

These bridge classes can be offered at other times as demand warrants.  Call or e-mail your requests.  Other classes which may be offered if requested include; Commonly Used Conventions and More Commonly Used Conventions.  Watch this web site for more information.
